The American Heart Association has made changes to the pals certification course. The new standards may be found at the American Heart Association website. No longer are we doing the airway breathing and circulation algorithm. We are now using the new protocols that state we must do compressions airway and then breathing. This change has come about due to the long-term studies showing that compressions takes precedence over ventilation. Even when we do cardiac compressions we are only producing about 30% cardiac output. As a result, that’s why we must now focus on excellent compressions with full recoil as well as advanced cardiac medications. There are New changes to the pediatric advanced life support algorithm. We’ve all experienced the uncomfortable feeling of doing our exercises on a thin mat. Thin mats have a purpose.
