Indoor Bonsai Don’t Always Need to Stay Indoors

One of the best things about Indoor bonsai is that they can always be with you. Outdoor bonsai have a world of charms that are uniquely their own, but the simple truth is that for much of the year you don’t get to see a lot of them. Maybe they’re out on the porch, or in the garage or buried under the snow for the winter. I even know someone who keeps them in what used to be the “beer fridge” until she found a better use for it. ( I’m not sure if there was universal agreement on that decision in her house). But where ever they are they’re not around and if you have a tree like this beautiful 22 inch tall Brush Cherry Bonsai tree, you’ve want to keep it constantly in view.

Which brings us to the summer. You know when summer arrives and you have the chance to get some fresh air and sunshine there’s no reason to deny it to your indoor bonsai tree. Most of them – in fact all of them that I can think of – enjoy spending the summers outside. – You have to watch those touchy ficus though, even though they love the conditions, they’re just as likely to drop a bunch of leaves when you take them out AND when you bring them back in. I’ll do it anyway. The only thing you really need to watch for it how you make the transition. Just do it slowly. Start with a few hours a day in the shade and just add first a little more time outside and then a little more sun until your tree is acclimated to staying out day and night in – ideally- dappled shade. And be darned sure that you don’t take them out too soon in the spring or leave them out too late in the fall.
